Autism Support Specialist

Job Description

We are seeking an Autism Support Specialist who will work closely with children on the autism spectrum, providing individualized support and implementing educational programmes tailored to their unique needs. This role is vital in helping children gain essential life skills while also collaborating with parents and educators to create a supportive environment.

Responsibilities

• Create a rich, engaging learning environment that meets the needs of children with autism.
• Evaluate and adapt teaching methods to fit the varying needs of students.
• Engage students in activities that promote independence and self-regulation.
• Document interventions and strategies used to support students' learning.
• Provide emotional and motivational support to enhance students’ confidence.
• Contribute to the school's autism support programs and initiatives.

Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Social Work or related field
• Preferably a postgraduate qualification in Special Needs Education

Experience

• At least 3 years of experience in special education or support roles

Technical Skills

• Crisis Management
• Planning and Organization

Soft Skills

• Communication
• Flexibility

Certifications

• Crisis Prevention Institute Certification
• Child Development Associate Certification

Languages

• English: Fluent
• Xhosa: Basic

Advantageous

• Knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorders: In-depth knowledge of various autism spectrum disorders and their implications in educational settings.
• Experience in Family Support: Ability to engage and support families of children with autism in a collaborative manner.
