Job Description

As a Low Vision Therapist and Orientation Mobility Specialist, you'll play a critical role in providing tailored educational support to visually impaired students. This position involves developing individualized education plans (IEPs), teaching essential life skills, and collaborating with families to ensure optimal learning environments.

Responsibilities

  • Create inclusive lesson plans and educational resources adapted for students with visual impairments.
  • Conduct regular assessments to evaluate students' capabilities and progress.
  • Provide training and support for teachers on best practices for teaching visually impaired students.
  • Facilitate skills development in orientation and mobility for students to enhance their independence.
  • Engage in ongoing communication with families to support students’ learning and development.
  • Develop community partnerships to enhance resources available for visually impaired students.
  • Stay informed about technological advancements in adaptive devices and teaching aids.

Requirements

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in Education or a related field
  • Specialized training in visually impaired education
Experience
  • Minimum of 2 years of teaching experience, preferably in special education or working with visually impaired students.
Technical Skills
  • Knowledge of Braille and specialized materials for visually impaired education
  • Use of assistive technology such as screen readers and Braille translation software
Soft Skills
  • Strong communication skills
  • Empathy and patience
Certifications
  • Valid South African teaching certification
Languages
  • English: Fluent

Advantageous

  • Master's degree in Education or a related field: Preferred qualification for advanced roles within the organization.
