Insurance Underwriter

Job Description

We are looking for a skilled Insurance Underwriter to join our team in Durban. In this role, you'll assess risk and determine policy eligibility for our clients. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in underwriting principles and excellent analytical skills.

Responsibilities

• Review applications for various types of insurance including life, health, and property.
• Communicate with clients to gather necessary information for underwriting.
• Evaluate and interpret data concerning risks and liabilities.
• Engage in continuous learning about new underwriting software and technologies.
• Assist in training junior underwriters and support teams.
• Participate in industry seminars to improve knowledge and networking.
• Assess and manage relationships with reinsurers regarding risk sharing.

Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Finance or a related field
• Postgraduate qualification in Insurance or Risk Management is preferred

Experience

• 5+ years of experience in underwriting or a related role

• Insurance Regulations
• Financial Analysis

Soft Skills

• Negotiation
• Team Leadership

Certifications

• Fellow of the Insurance Institute (FII)
• Diploma in Insurance

Languages

• English: Fluent
• Zulu: Basic

Advantageous

• Past experience in a supervisory role: Experience overseeing underwriting teams and processes.
• Familiarity with Digital Underwriting Tools: Knowledge of using digital tools for streamlined underwriting processes.
