Otter Trawler Boatswain

Job Description

The Otter Trawler Boatswain will be responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient operation of the vessel and its crew whilst fishing at sea. This role is critical to the success of the fishing operation and will require the individual to work long hours in challenging conditions.

Responsibilities

• Oversee daily operations on the vessel ensuring proper adherence to protocols.
• Coordinate the deck crew during fishing operations.
• Ensure effective use of all fishing gear and equipment.
• Assist with vessel maintenance tasks as needed.
• Analyze fish catch data and report findings to the captain.
• Implement safety drills and emergency response protocols.
• Engage with the crew to promote teamwork and effective communication.
• Maintain and repair fishing gear and equipment as required.
• Document all fishing activities and facilitate reporting.
• Assist in the planning of fishing trips and strategies based on conditions.

Requirements

Education

• STCW95 Basic Safety Training Certificate
• Additional qualifications in a relevant field are advantageous

Experience

• Experience working on an otter trawler is a must

Technical Skills

• Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy loads
• Ability to work well in a team environment

Soft Skills

• Decision-making under pressure
• Effective communication with crew and captain

Certifications

• Fishing Master Class 1 or equivalent qualification
• Experience in sustainable fishing practices is a plus

Languages

• English: Fluent
• Xhosa: Basic
