Job Description

As a Corrections Counselor, you will be instrumental in providing individual and group counseling to inmates while developing treatment plans that promote rehabilitation. Your role is significant in helping offenders reintegrate into society successfully.

Responsibilities

  • Administer psychological assessments and interpret results.
  • Develop and lead interventions that address substance abuse and behavioral issues.
  • Liaise with external stakeholders to provide continuity of care post-release.
  • Offer training and support to new counselors and interns.
  • Utilize trauma-informed approaches in all counseling sessions.
  • Promote a culture of respect and dignity within the correctional environment.
  • Document all interactions thoroughly for transparency and staff reviews.
  • Create a safe space for inmates to express their thoughts and feelings.
  • Identify and implement best practices in corrections counseling.
  • Engage in continuous professional development to enhance counseling skills.

Requirements

Education
  • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or counseling
  • Master's degree in a relevant field is preferred
Experience
  • 3+ years of experience working in a correctional environment
Technical Skills
  • Group therapy facilitation
  • Trauma-informed care
Soft Skills
  • Strong problem-solving abilities
Certifications
  • Certified Alcohol and Drug Counselor (CADC)
Languages
  • English: Fluent
  • Zulu: Basic
