Job Description

The Marine Underwriter is responsible for evaluating, assessing, and underwriting marine insurance policies for individuals and businesses. The ideal candidate should have a thorough understanding of the marine industry and the insurance market in South Africa, ensuring that policies meet both client needs and regulatory requirements.

Responsibilities

• Review marine insurance applications and perform risk assessments to decide on coverage.
• Create and maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring ongoing communication.
• Assist in the development of marine insurance products and innovative policy structures.
• Stay informed on new regulations in the marine and insurance sectors.
• Monitor market trends to adapt underwriting guidelines and practices.
• Support the sales team by providing underwriting expertise during client meetings.
• Analyze data and provide insights for continuous improvement in underwriting processes.

Requirements

Education

• Bachelor's degree in Insurance, Business, or related field
• Advanced qualification in marine insurance is an advantage

Experience

• Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in underwriting or a related field

Technical Skills

• Strong understanding of insurance policies, terms, and conditions
• Computer literacy, particularly in Microsoft Office Suite

Soft Skills

• Customer service orientation
• Ability to work under pressure

Certifications

• Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) certification
• Certified Marine Insurance Specialist (CMIS)

Languages

• English: Fluent
